People with HES commonly have general symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, cough and rash. Depending on which organs are involved, people with HES can also experience:

  • Skin rash
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Chest pain
  • Neurologic problems, such as blurred vision and slurred speech
  • Cardiac symptoms

Organs in the body that are most commonly damaged by HES include the heart, central nervous system, lungs, skin, stomach, and intestines. The symptoms of HES will vary among people who have the condition. This can make HES challenging to accurately diagnose, which can result in a delay before people with the condition receive an official diagnosis.
